6EK Genius Hour Presentations

Last week the students in 6EK presented their Genius Hour presentations via a scheduled Google Hangout. The reason we had a Google Hangout was to allow our parents who work or are unable to come into our classroom at a scheduled time, to view the students fantastic Genius Hour presentations.
In having a Google Hangout our parents could watch from work or at home. We also invited some of our Blogging Buddies to watch the fantastic work we had done this term.
We would also like to thank St Marks for the fantastic questions they asked us about our presentations.

  • What did you like most about presenting using a Google Hangout?
  • If you could change one thing what would it be?
  • If you watched our Google Hangout LIVE we would love to know how many people were in the room with you watching? Where about in the world were you watching from?

Special Showcase

I can see myself as a Night Zookeeper, with my uniform on and the moon shining bright. The Nilth Monsters coming out, and I get to fight them in the dark night sky. After I defeat them, I get to look after amazing creatures. From candy breathing dragons, to penguins who eat fireworks. I’d get to jump between the floating mountains, and breath in the fresh air. Then I’d get to go ice skating in the ice jungles. The creatures would love me, as I  would feed them cookies and icecream. That’s why I’d love to be a Night Zookeeper.

Blogging Challenge Week 4 – A picture is worth

Activity 1

Watch this video about sharing work and write a post about what you learned.

 Activity 2.

Check out this story using remix and fair use of video. Leave a comment below after watching the video. What was interesting, positive or negative about it?

Activity 3. Find an image or piece of music. Add it to your post and write a poem relating to the image or music. Invite your readers to write their own poems. PS April is Poetry Month. Thanks to Mrs Hutchison for this idea.

Activity 4. Similar to activity 3. Find an interesting landscape image.  Write the beginning of a story relating to your image. Remember to include a conflict of some sort between your characters. Invite your readers to finish the story. How many different endings can you get? Which ending do you prefer?

Activity 5. Write a sentence using just images – no words.

Activity 6. Find 5 images that create a story – again no words.

Activity 7. Create a slideshowphoto gallery or poster about your interests to add to your about me page or as a separate post.

Activity 8 – Create your own images and add to a post of your choice

Other options for creating your own images include:

  1. Image Generators such as ImageGenerator.org
  2. Comic Generators like MakeBeliefsComix.com,  kerpoofToonDoo
  3. Photo Editors like Befunkyfd’s Flickr Tools
  4. Tag Cloud Creators such as Wordle
  5. Graph Creators including GraphJam and Crappy Graphs

Mixing up your images using these types of tools can really spice up your posts! Leave a comment on this post, if you or your class can recommend some other image sites to add to this list.

Activity 9– Zoom out from an image

We first tried this activity in the challenge in September 2010. Choose a picture, and have your readers zoom out, so to speak, by leaving comments.  Check out the example fromHuzzah who finished their story. If doing this activity, include the word ‘zoom’ in your title so I can find it easily. Remember to give attribution. Most important here is to read previous comments, so you can add to the story.

Check out these zoom pictures: BeckyJacquelineAbbey

Activity 10 – Go back to previous posts

If you have used images in any previous posts you have written, then you are ethically obliged to go back to the post and give the correct attribution or take the image out of the post if it does not have the right creative commons license.

Activity 11 – Create a jigsaw from your image. Check out how Mrs Schmidt’s students did this for a previous activity.

Hot air in the cold air and early morning glow

Activity 12– Tell the story of the picture

From Bill Ferreirae – I sometime find a picture and tell students to use that picture to come up with a story. It can be about the picture, what happened before, what will happen next, etc. So, here is the image I have chosen for you to start with. Copy the image to your post, then write the story.

Week 3 Blogging Challenge – Digital Footprints

Do you know what a Digital Footprint is? What is your Digital Footprint? As part of this weeks blogging challenge we are looking at how to create a positive digital footprint. Below there are a few videos and activities that you can do to make you aware of your own digital footprint.

Activity 1.

Watch the first two videos above then leave a comment on this post about something that you found very interesting in one of the videos. Write a post explaining the differences between the videos. Which did you prefer and why?

Activity 2.

After watching the two videos, write a post about your digital footprint. Is it positive or negative? Would you be proud to have your grandparents or your future grandchildren look at everything you have included in your digital footprint? Why or why not? Maybe Google your name to see what is online about you, that you might not have put there. Remember to Google your nickname used in online games etc as information might be included there.

Activity 3.

Imagine you are debating this topic: It is better to have a negative digital footprint than no footprint at all. Give three reasons to support each side of the debate.

Activity 4.

Watch the third video. Why is it important to check out the settings whenever you buy a new device? Default settings often allow the manufacturer to gain information about you without you realising it.

Activity 5.

Should all teachers, principals and parents have a digital footprint in this time of technology? Google your teacher or principal (with their permission first) or even your parents. What have they got online? Do they have some information you think should not be there? Discuss it with them. Write a post about the discussion you had without giving away personal information to your readers.

Activity 6.

I would like your help to get the list organized. Write a post about 5 of your favourite web tools or apps. In your post mention how old you need to be to use it, whether you had to sign up to use it and what type of tool or app it is eg mindmapping, poll/survey, slideshow. Also tell me why you enjoy using the tool or app.

Activity 7.

Here are some websites to visit related to cybersafety and digital footprints. Visit some of them and write a post, create a poster or glogster, create a cartoon about what you found out. Your teacher might also give you other websites to visit.

ACMA Australia – cybersafety for young kids, kids and teens.
Google has some digcitizenship adventures relating to digital footprints – more for middle and high school students
Kidsmart from the UK has some great tips and information

3 Weeks 3 Students in 6EK 100WC Showcased

I am one extremely proud teacher and I would like to congratulate Joseph on having his 100WC writing piece from week 24 was selected  and awarded as a Special Showcase Piece. Joseph is the third student in 6EK this year to have his work awarded as a Special Showcase Piece. Well Done to both Cecilia, Maggie and Joseph on this fantastic achievement.

Week 25 Showcase

This is a fantastic achievement. Well done to all students within 6EK who take part in the 100WC each week.

The 3 Smart Pigs

Once upon a time 3 smart pigs had enough of living at their parents house so they went to look for a new area to build in.

The first little piggy started to build a solid concrete house. The second piggy built his house out of scrap metal. The third piggy was really smart and made his house out solid iron.A wolf came and wanted to destroy all the houses. He grinned and said “these houses are impossible to smash down”.so he went on his phone and called the nuclear plant to blow it up. 3,2,1.

Special Showcase

Last week the students in 6EK looked at what love meant to them.

Through the use of VersoApp students watched a video on LOVE and then created an anonymous discussion where they answered the question ‘What does LOVE mean to you?’ Once students had done this they then created a collage of what love meant to them.

Student responses to “What does LOVE mean to you?”

  • Love means to take care of someone and the other person will do the same thing for you.
  • Love means doing something that makes you happy or being with someone that makes you happy. 🙂
  • Love to me means that you can love anything in the world but it doesn’t have to be in the relationship way.
  • Love means to me that I love all my family and friends but differently. I love the way I am different from everyone else and I have a different interests and personalities. I love photography, learning and basketball but I know that others don’t like/love the same things as me.
  • There are three different types of love, there is the kissy in love one, there is the liking things one and there is the friends one. I love my family and I like to kiss them goodnight. I like to eat food and play hockey. And I love my friends because they make me feel happy. One big thing about love for me is that it makes me feel happy and good about myself.

  • What do you LOVE?
  • What does LOVE mean to you?
  • What did you learn about LOVE?

Well Done Maggie

I am one extremely proud teacher and I would like to congratulate Maggie on having her 100WC writing piece from week 23 was selected  and awarded as a Special Showcase Piece. This is a fantastic achievement. Well done to all students within 6EK who take part in the 100WC each week.

I was running but I couldn’t see where I was going. The early morning sun came through the branches of the trees causing me to feel blinded. Someone was following me. The butterflies in my stomach were starting to turn into large dragonflies. The thick dense woodland was starting to clear away. I could see the pathway coming to an end. In one quick movement  everything went from bad to worse. I could feel my legs pushing through the earth. The quick sand was flowing making me fall quicker. I turned my head to the left only to find the dark shadow approaching…

Well Done Cecilia

I would like to congratulate Cecilia on having her 100WC writing piece from week 22 selected  and awarded as a Special Showcase Piece.

This is a fantastic achievement. Well done to all students within 6EK who take part in the 100WC each week.

Cecilia’s 100WC – Week 22-

I stumbled into the forrest, lost and confused. The trees blended into the mist, looking like a dark blur. My vision was pitch black, nothing in my sight I could see, although I could feel the prickly tops of passing branches as I walked. Then suddenly, a light that almost blinded me appeared, a beautiful stretch of colourful lights appeared around me, and a mysterious golden and green floating house immediately caught my attention. I was in complete awe, I stepped closer to it, then suddenly I blacked out……….and could vaguely see an evil grin as I drifted off……….

eBuddies: Skype with Class 5LE

Our Class takes part in an eBuddies program where we share our learning with a few other classes around the world. Today we had our second Skype session with Class 5LE from Campsie Public School in Sydney.

As it was our first Skype session with Class 5LE. During our Skype session  we asked a few questions to help us to get to know them better. Some interesting things we learnt about their school include:

  • They are a bilingual school which means for one hour a day their lesson is taught in Korean
  • They have 750 students nearly double the amount of students at our school.
  • The students in Class 5LE are doing Genius Hour
  • They have a school band and dance group
  • They start school at 8:45am and finish at 3pm.

We are looking forward to continuing to share and learn more with Class 5LE and the other classes involved in eBuddies.

  • What do you like most about Skype in Class 6EK?
  • What were some other differences between Class 5LE and Class 6EK?
  • If you could ask Class 5LE another question what would it be?
